On death

Death, depicted as a hooded medieval sailor, extends a hand beside a waiting boat at a twilight harbour
Death, the Old Sailor (2026)

Death, you old sailor! Coming down on us with an irresistible invitation to that voyage which allows for no return.

Oh, what a teacher you are, delivering a lesson we so often forget: that in the end, in the finality of our existence, we are all but the same.

What a powerful weaver you are, weaving the final thread into the tapestry of our lives, a work we don’t get to behold as a whole, but leave behind in the memories of those who bore witness to our existence.

I hope that when you come with that final summons, I am able, with every ounce of my being, to tell you that I lived courageously and selflessly, not without error, but with an ever-vibrant sense of gratitude for the gift of existence.

And when I finally accept that invitation of yours, I’ll do it with a smirk on my face, knowing full well that I’ll have the last laugh! Hahaha, for my hope lies in Christ, who, through the power of the Spirit, defeated you on that great day.

That is why I can rejoice and welcome you with open arms! Till then, till we meet and your defeat is fully revealed, you remain ever humbling.
